Smiths third studio album, Either/Or, was recorded in several locations, mostly in Portland, Oregon. At the time, the singer-songwriter was still a member of Heatmiser, and the album was released in February 1997 following Heatmisers dissolution.
Employing the use of a variety of instruments from drums to harmonica and organ to cello, all of which he plays himself the albums sound is more lush and rich than Smiths previous recordings. Throughout each song on Either/Or Smith confronts the demons that haunted him, reflecting on failed relationships, the perils of stardom, and the unrelenting pull of addiction.
