Roans debut studio album was originally released in September 2023. Written and produced alongside Dan Nigro beginning in 2018, Midwest Princess is noted for its campy pop sound and influence from LGBT performance art and drag shows. The album was included in several best-of 2023 year-end lists. Although not an immediate commercial success, the album garnered a cult following and became a sleeper hit by early 2024. The albums commercial breakthrough was largely influenced by Roans supporting act on Olivia Rodrigos Guts World Tour, her performances at music festivals like Coachella and Governors Ball, and the success of her follow-up single, Good Luck, Babe! (which does not appear on the album).
