Maia Jelavics debut album, Back Burner, emerged from an unexpected burst of creative chemistry. Recorded over three days at Powell Lane Studios by the beach in Coogee, Sydney Australia, and co-produced with engineer Charlie Tait, the record was built instinctively, with Jelavic and Tait playing all instruments between them. What began as a spontaneous recording session quickly unfolded into a complete album, shaped by trust, momentum, and shared musical intuition.
At the centre of the album is Jelavics voice; distinct and fragile yet strikingly powerful, with unflinching rawness and a commanding presence. It carries songs that form a quiet and sometimes explosive coming-of-age narrative, rooted in the trials and tribulations of navigating ones twenties. The record reflects themes of becoming, uncertainty, devotion and disillusionment, capturing the emotional push and pull of growth, intimacy, and self-definition. Intricate guitar work and piano-led arrangements move between delicacy and tension, supported by ambient textures and lush, expansive full-band moments. Rooted in folk with subtle rock, alternative and atmospheric influences such as Leonard Cohen, Laura Marling, Nick Cave and Weyes Blood, the album favours emotional immediacy and intuition.
Unfolding with quiet confidence and emotional clarity, Back Burner is a coming-of-age record that traces the quiet reckonings and hard-won clarity of ones twenties, announcing Maia Jelavic as an artist unafraid to let vulnerability, restraint, and power coexist.
