Songs for Dead Sailors is the second in Toby Wren’s shipwreck series after 2015’s Black Mountain. It is a psychological exploration of love and loss in the time of tall ships. This is Toby’s first album featuring lyrics, brought to life by the remarkable Merinda Dias-Jayasinha and an expanded ensemble featuring Andrew Garton on woodwinds and Sophie Min on piano. Underpinned by Toby’s intricate guitar work and the astonishing combined feel of Andrew Shaw (double bass) and John Parker (drums), Songs for Dead Sailors ranges from mesmeric and introspective set pieces, to off-the-hook virtuosic interplay.
