1989s gritty neo-noir ‘Violent Cop’ is perhaps best known as the movie that launched the directorial career of its star Takeshi Kitano. This Japanese films seedy tale of police corruption and urban injustice possessed a startlingly immersive atmosphere, one of brooding melancholy punctuated by spurts of sudden brutality. That ambience is partly due to Kitanos auteurship, but also partly down to the music of Daisaku Kume, who captures the essence of Violent Cop through his elegant compositions.
Although previously best known as the keyboardist for fusion bands like Prism and T-Square, Kume showcases his unheralded versatility here through deft reinterpretations of Erik Satie, desolate smooth jazz, an Italian baroque choral piece, and even strains of neo-classical and Western influences.
