Description
Two more essential Art Pepper reissues, originally recorded in 1960, are the albumsGettin’ Together!andIntensity. Originally released on either side ofSmack Up, these albums underscore just how refreshingly creative Pepper was at the time.Gettin’ Together‘s tight “Bijou the Poodle,” penned by Pepper, leads the way. Often described as a sequel toArt Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section,Gettin’ Together!once again finds Pepper backed on beat by Miles Davis alums (bassist Paul Chambers, drummer Jimmy Cobb).
As a sort of follow-up to Art Pepper’s matchup withMiles Davis’ trio in the 1957 classicArt Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section, Pepper utilizesDavis’ sidemen on this 1960 near-classic. In addition to pianistWynton Kelly, bassistPaul Chambers, and drummerJimmy Cobb, trumpeterConte Candolimakes the group a quintet on four of the eight numbers. This time around, rather than emphasizing standards, Pepper performs just three (“Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise,”Thelonious Monk’s “Rhythm-A-Ning,” and “The Way You Look Tonight”) and includes three originals of his own: “Diane,” “Bijou the Poodle,” and “Gettin’ Together.” The music is all very straight-ahead and bop-oriented, but as usual, Pepper brings something very personal and unique to his playing; he sounds like no one else. via Label
