Description
Variation, originally released in 1969, is the only recording led by trombonist Hiroshi Suzuki and jazz drummer Masahiko Togashi as a duo, also featuring pianist Yuji Ohno, saxophonist Jun Suzuki and trumpeter Tetsuo Fushimi. An essential J-Jazz album – monumental even as it was possibly the first new/free jazz album recorded in Japan. Includes songs such as “Castle Cats”, which develops from a jazz-rock style to free jazz, “Suzu no Uta” , where Yuji Ohno’s beautiful piano shines with the intermittent sound of bells, and the aggressive “Passion”. A wonderful piece of work. – adapted from Universounds (Yusuke Ogawa)
