Mutiny After Midnight marks Sturgill Simpsons second release as Johnny Blue Skies, following his 2024 debut,Passage Du Desir, which landed at #2 on Rolling Stones list of the Best Country and Americana Albums of the year.
Recorded and produced at Dan Auerbachs Easy Eye Sound in Nashville, the whole process was a spontaneous affair in order to capture the vibe: Theres a simple goal we as a band set out to achieve: to make a dance record, Simpson said in a statement. I wrote words to what is happening in the world and my life in real time, and played with a group of musicians I deeply love and respect, Simpson said. Together, we made an album that is very fun, and will hopefully offer some relief from darkness in the world.
The album features nine tracks, kicking off with the opener Make America Fuk Again and concluding with Aint That A Bitch. This new venture marks the latest move in a career that continues to defy industry stereotypes through a catalog of songs built on poetic songwriting, constant evolution, and the democratic brotherhood of a band.
