The second of Jon Batiste’s recordings taken from his November 2018 residency at New York’s Village Vanguard, Chronology of a Dream: Live at the Village Vanguard is a vibrant set with the pianist and vocalist backed by a whip-smart band digging into the energy of 60s and 70s hard bop and soul. Several of Batistes originals get definitive readings, from the irrepressible funk of Blacck, to the brass-heavy R&B groove of Birthe. There are also a couple of heartfelt tributes to Batistes former boss, trumpeter Roy Hargrove, who tragically died aged 49 on the first night of recording.
