Although titled as a movie soundtrack the 1994 Toei filmShdan Sase, it is essentially a solo album by Japanese trumpet player and producer Kazufumi “Echo” Kodama of the influential dub reggae band Mute Beat.
In 1994, the legendary Jamaican trombonist, the late Rico Rodriguez, was invited from his homeland to participate in the recording, featuringFishmans members Kinichi Motegi (Dr.), Yuzuru Kashiwabara (B.), and Hakase (Key.), as well as DJ Barri-K from Gas Boys with his impressive turntable skills. Now reissued thirty years after its original release in 1994, the sound remains timeless.

AboutKazufumi Kodama:
Kazufumi Kodama is a Japanese trumpet player and influential producer across Japan’s budding dub scene which eventually gave way to Fishmans. Kodama is most famous for leading reggae/dub group Mute Beat in the late 80s, this being among the first acts of its kind in Japan and lending Kodama the opportunity to spread the influence of this style across Japan’s music scene.
In 1991, Kodama assisted in the creation ofFishmans‘ first album Chappie, Don’t Cry as an executive producer from label Virgin Japan. Having only produced this first album of the band’s, Kodama still regularly interacts with members of Fishmans to this day, sometimes appearing for live performances (such as his contributions on The Long Season Revue in 2005). A scholar of reggae, Kodama was a direct inspiration to Fishmans band leader Shinji Sato, whose guitar case was signed by Kodama before he entered the music industry proper.
Beyond Mute Beat, Kodama has a prolific solo career including collaborations with the likes of Lee Scratch Perry and Roland Alphonso. In 1999, Kodama founded group Kodama and the Dub Station Band, which has since released several albums in absence of Mute Beat’s active career.
