Mastodons third studio album was released on September 12, 2006. Like the previous album, Leviathan, Blood Mountain is a concept album. According to bassist Troy Sanders, Its about climbing up a mountain and the different things that can happen to you when youre stranded on a mountain, in the woods, and youre lost. Youre starving, hallucinating, running into strange creatures. Youre being hunted. Its about that whole struggle. The album includes guest appearances by Scott Kelly of Neurosis (Crystal Skull), Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age (Colony Of Birchmen), keyboard player Isaiah Ikey Owens of The Mars Volta (Pendulous Skin) and singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala of At The Drive-In and The Mars Volta (Siberian Divide).
