A fantastic album that’s as striking as its cover – one of the most sharp-edged sets from the Japanese jazz scene in years. The group’s a bit less “dub” than you might guess from their name and they work in a mostly acoustic blend of tenor, trumpet, piano, bass, and drums; produced with some slight electronics at times, but always in ways that never abstract the sound too much. Drawing inspiration from the 1960s from themlikes of Miles Davis Quintet, and quoting jazz figures like Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy, this album gets abstract yet pushing jazz-funk grooves at the same time and It continues to resonate.
There’s a boldness here that really matches the Ornette Coleman reference in the cover image and the group is far less groove-oriented, and much more cerebral than most of their Tokyo combo contemporaries. Most tracks spin out with a slow-building, almost brooding feel although a few others pick up the pace and groove a bit more.
