Originally released in 1970 as part of Decca’s British Jazz Explosion Lansdowne Series, Greek Variations & Other Aegean Exercises stands as one of Neil Ardley’s most admired works, bringing together orchestral scope, progressive modern jazz ideas and the distinctive studio character of Denis Preston’s Lansdowne recordings. The album captures an important moment in British jazz, with Ardley, Ian Carr and Don Rendell each pointing towards different directions the scene would take in the years that followed. Ardley’s larger-scale compositional thinking sits alongside Carr’s more exploratory electric instincts and Rendell’s grounded acoustic phrasing, giving the set both structure and movement across its two sides. Includes Carr’s fantastic rare-groover, Persephone’s Jive.
