With their 1988 album Naked, Talking Heads set out to merge the layered rhythmic experimentation of Remain in Light with the polished, ironic accessibility of their mid-80s work such as Little Creatures. Produced by Steve Lillywhite, the result is an album that bubbles with inventive arrangements, diverse instrumentation, and richly textured grooves. From the satirical anthem (Nothing But) Flowers and the propulsive Blind to the brass-infused Mr. Jones and the haunting closer Cool Water, Naked finds the band embracing maturity without sacrificing creativity. The interplay of brass, woodwinds, French piano, and twangy guitar textures makes this one of their most sonically adventurous records.
